Hon Mun: reserve rules, access and cost
Hon Mun is an island in Nha Trang Bay and the first marine reserve in Vietnam. The thing to know before you go: this is protected water with rules, not an ordinary island. Snorkelling with a mask is allowed, diving only through a licensed operator, part of the area is closed to tourism entirely, boat numbers are capped and anchoring at will is banned.

What Hon Mun is
The island lies roughly 10 to 14 km from Nha Trang and is built of dark volcanic rock, which is where the name comes from: "hòn" is island or rock, "mun" is ebony. Over 350 coral species have been recorded in its waters, making this one of the richest reefs in Vietnam. Underwater visibility reaches 15 to 20 metres, which is a lot for the South China Sea.
It is the first and still the best known marine reserve in the country. Its protected status, rather than distance or logistics, is what decides everything here: where your boat can moor, whether you can dive, and which part of the water you are allowed into at all.
Reserve rules in 2026
The regime tightened twice: in 2022, when the water was temporarily closed, and in 2025, when the current restrictions came in.

Why the restrictions exist
The reef degraded, and the decline was measured. Coral cover on the northeast and southwest sides dropped from 53.7 per cent in 2015 to 32.6 per cent in 2022. On the southeast and northwest sides the fall was sharper still, from 52.2 to 11.2 per cent.
In June 2022 the Nha Trang authorities suspended swimming, diving and boat activity around Hon Mun to assess the water and prepare a recovery plan. That suspension was a measure for the assessment period; what applies today is the permanent zoning regime instead.
One practical conclusion follows: the rules here are not static. Sections can be closed or restricted depending on the state of the reef. Confirm the position for your date rather than relying on an article six months old, this one included.
Getting there
The island is reachable only by water. Boats leave from Vinh Truong port about 5 km from central Nha Trang; the old pier by the Oceanography Museum is closed to tourists. A speedboat takes 20 to 30 minutes, a slow wooden boat noticeably longer.

- Speedboat snorkelling. Groups of 10 to 12, less time in transit and more in the water.
- Chartering the whole vessel. Worth it from six to eight people, or when the schedule matters: leaving before the crowd and moving on when the tour boats arrive.

Private charter: what to check
On a chartered vessel rather than a tour, the reserve regime becomes your problem rather than a travel agency's. Caps on boat numbers and on mooring mean not every vessel can approach and stop.
- On what basis the vessel enters the reserve, and whether that holds on your date.
- Where exactly it moors: a buoy, a permitted berth, or wherever it lands. Anchoring at will carries fines.
- Whether environmental fees are inside the quoted price or paid separately on site.
- What happens if a section is closed on the day: refund, reschedule, or a different route.
- For diving, whether the operator is licensed with a certified guide.
